You might not notice a problem with your kitchen plumbing until you’re right in the middle of a weeknight dinner. When you’re focused on getting a recipe right or on feeding your family, the last thing you want to deal with is an issue that could throw a wrench into the whole process.
Here are some kitchen plumbing problems you should watch out for:
- Clogged Garbage Disposal. A working garbage disposal makes after-dinner clean-up so much easier. However, it’s vital that you remember there are certain things that the garbage disposal just can’t handle. Coffee grounds, avocado skins, animal bones, and other hard foods can interfere with the motor. If you notice a clog in your disposal, you might be tempted to reach down and dislodge it. Don’t do this with your hands, as this can be risky. Corrosive drain cleaner products might be your next move, but for the sake of your kitchen plumbing, it’s best not to use any harsh chemicals.
- Clogged Kitchen Sinks. Similar to a clogged garbage disposal, a sink that won’t drain is usually caused by a blockage of some kind. The same advice from before applies to clogged kitchen sinks: avoid corrosive drain cleaner. You might be able to remove the clog with a kitchen plunger, but if the blockage is severe enough or you just don’t want the hassle, you can always call a professional plumber.
- Leaking Faucet. A faucet dripping water from the spout is an easy problem to spot and something you’ll definitely hear. The leak might start out small, but with time, the drip gets worse. If you think your sink is leaking but don’t see a drip, then you can inspect the base of the faucet for pools of water. A damaged O-ring or a valve cartridge in need of replacement are common causes of this kind of leak. Finally, you can check the kitchen plumbing beneath the sink for signs of water damage.
