Tips for Maintaining Your Kitchen Plumbing

Tips for Maintaining Your Kitchen Plumbing
|

We rely on our kitchen plumbing for everyday usage, but when a situation pops up that requires repair, it can really put a damper on our daily routine. Fortunately, there are some ways to maintain your kitchen plumbing that will prevent the need for unexpected repairs or the sudden replacement of an appliance. Here are a few tips:

Tip #1: Clean the Garbage Disposal

There is one appliance linked to the plumbing in your kitchen that is of major importance, and that’s your garbage disposal! One of the best ways to maintain your kitchen plumbing for this appliance is to clean it regularly. If you notice foul odors coming from your disposal, this could be the result of food buildup. Luckily, there are some easy ways to keep it clean. For example, you can grind up ice cubes with orange or lemon rinds to clear away built-up gunk. Secondly, while the disposal is running, add a few drops of dish liquid, then run some cold water to rinse away any remaining build up.

Tip #2: Avoid Kitchen Plumbing Clogs

While the sink might be one of the first places to throw away food debris, not all food is meant for the sink. You should avoid putting these things down the sink to prevent clogs: stringy, fibrous food items like banana peels, chicken skin, or celery stalks; liquid grease from cooking on the stovetop or frying; and liquid clog removers because they can cause the clog to become worse instead of better!

Tip #3: Maintain the Kitchen Faucet

Did you know that leaks from the kitchen faucet can sometimes be caused by build up on the aerator underneath the faucet handle? Taking time to carefully remove the faucet and gently clean the aerator in a mild vinegar solution can help prevent leaking when the faucet is running.
